In a delightful turn of events, I enjoyed some pre-Mother's Day R&R at the pool Saturday afternoon ... wearing a hat and major sunscreen, thank you very much. Of course, I had a stack of the latest design magazines as company. I'd already flipped through most of them, but they still needed the full review and page-tear-out before I put them in the recycling bin. Well, House Beautiful has quickly become one of my favorite magazines and I was eager to make my way back through the May issue. One of my favorite features is the "Everywhere We Look" column that highlights a design trend that seems to be growing in popularity. Well, May's "Everywhere We Look" column highlighted "spatter" - basically, the paint drip motif most often associated with the artist Jackson Pollock. Really? I'm sorry, but - putting aside Pollock's work - I am just not excited about spatter as a design statement. Now, let's not get hasty. Almost everything can work, depending on the setting in which you put it. But - for me - I just cannot imagine using spatter anywhere but a child's bedroom or playroom. Maybe in a really graphic, modern kitchen? Hmmmm .... maybe I should say that - for me - I just haven't found the right setting yet. But I definitely know that I'm not interested in spatter wallpaper that costs $399 per roll, like the Painter's Studio wallpaper by Ralph Lauren Home (also featured in "Everywhere We Look"). At that point, I'd rather create my own Pollock-inspired masterpiece on the walls! What do you think? I might be alone on this ... "Everywhere We Look" mentions Albert Hadley, Jeffrey Bilhuber and Tom Scheerer as fans of the Harry Hinson-designed Spatter fabric and wallpaper. Check out Jennifer at The Peak of Chic for another perspective (and some great photos of the Spatter fabric and wallpaper in a dining room and a powder room).
